WHAT IS IELTS ?
IELTS is an acronym for international English language testing system. It is an international testing standard that examines your level of English language proficiency. The candidates are examined for their English language skills in four ways. These four modes of testing are not different to the methods employed to judge expertise in any given language. The four methods used in IELTS exams are –
LISTENING – listening module tests the ability of a candidate to hear, understand and answer 40 questions based on four sections of different audio- clips played in the exams. The time duration provided to attempt this section is about 40 minutes.
READING – The reading section consists of three reading texts distributed between three different sections. Reading modules has 40 questions that can be based on any areas of knowledge science, arts, animal life or current affairs. Reading modules have different content for General IELTS test and Academic IELTS test. Time allowed to complete the reading module is 60 minutes.
WRITING – the writing module is again conducted in two modes – General IELTS and Academic IELTS. For both type of test time allocated is 1 hour that is distributed into 2 tasks. Task 1 is provided 20 minutes and task 2 is provided 40 minutes. Task 2 is usually same for both General module and Academic module where as task 1 is different as General writing task 1 involves writing a letter and academic module task 1 has graph, chart, table or diagram with statistic based on either time or quantity.
SPEAKING –The speaking module test is conducted separate from the rest of the three modules and is usually either couple of days before or after the listening. The test takes total of 10-15 minutes and is conducted in three sections such as introduction (2-3 minutes), cue card/topic card (2 minutes) and interactive (3-4 minutes).

HOW IS IELTS TEST CONDUCTED?
The test of IELTS is jointly managed by university of Cambridge ESOL examinations, the British Council and IDP Education. The role of these partners is to conduct tests as per the norms and conditions set by university of Cambridge. The material, books, examination material etc are all managed and evaluated from time to time by the Cambridge University itself. It is conducted in two phases –

IELTS LEVEL REQUIRED BY ACADEMIC INSTITUTION FOR ADMISSION
The IELTS minimum scores required by academic institutions vary. As a general rule, institutions from English-speaking countries require a higher IELTS band.
UNITED STATES – The highest IELTS band required by a university is 8.5 by the graduate school of journalism at Columbia University, the only US institution to require this band.
While Ohio state university, Moritiz College of law is listed as requiring an 8.5 on the IELTS website, the school lists an 8.0
UNITED KINGDOM – most IELTS requirements by the universities fall between 5.5 to 7.0. For example

FINLAND –Sibelius academy requires minimum 5.5 to a bachelor and 6.0 to a master’s degree.
GERMANY – university of Bromberg requires 7.0 bands
TURKEY –Bilkent University requires 5.0/6.5.
